Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Film: Script Update Explained

Fans hunting for a fresh Brandon Sanderson Mistborn movie update got one earlier this month, and it came with a twist. Speaking exclusively with Collider's Maggie Lovitt at FanX Salt Lake, Brandon Sanderson revealed that the screenplay he announced as finished back in July had already moved well past that point. Sanderson confirmed he'd turned in the first draft, adding that it was "actually secretly the second draft" because he'd done a bunch of revisions on the first, putting the real number closer to the eighteenth pass.
The screenplay has already gone back for more notes
The Collider conversation, published on 7 October 2026, spelled out what happens next. Sanderson confirmed he's personally writing the entire Mistborn screenplay, having turned in that first draft. He also addressed where Apple TV stands on it. Sanderson confirmed Apple has given him feedback on the submitted script, and that his job now is revisions, finding a way to work what the studio wants into the story.
ScreenRant, reporting on the same update, noted that Sanderson said back in September that he reckoned the script still needed at least three further rounds of revision before it could go into production. CBR carried similar comments from the FanX appearance, with Sanderson stressing that the challenge is "navigate getting what they want into the story... but also maintaining the core and not letting it get too long."
Why Sanderson won't let cameras roll on an unfinished script
The reasoning behind all this patience came out in more detail on a separate livestream, covered by Winter Is Coming. Sanderson was joined by his Riftwake co-author, Janci Patterson, and was asked directly about the film's progress. He made clear that fans waiting on casting news or a director announcement are going to be waiting a while longer, because the screenplay comes first and he wants it locked down before anyone else gets involved.
The experience shaping that decision goes back to his time on Amazon's Wheel of Time adaptation. Sanderson used the moment to explain why his experience on The Wheel of Time is directly behind the approach he's taking this time. He was blunt about the practical reality of screenwriting timelines too. He said "we really can't do anything until screenplay is approved and screenplays take, you know, four or five drafts."
It isn't a one-off stance, either. A related report from the same livestream, covered by Winter Is Coming, notes that Sanderson has repeatedly made the same point about Mistborn: no director will be brought on and no filming will begin until the script is complete. He is applying an even tougher version of that rule to the Stormlight Archive television series, wanting season two scripts largely finished before season one even wraps filming.
What this means for readers waiting on the books
None of this touches his book schedule, and that's the part readers following him for new releases will care about most. His newest standalone Cosmere novel landed this month regardless of the film's pace: the ebook and audiobook editions of The Fires of December arrived on 6 October 2026, as reported by Books of Brilliance, with a wider physical release still to come in December.
The next full Mistborn novel is further off but unaffected by the screenplay delays. Ghostbloods, the opening book of Mistborn Era Three, remains pointed at a December 2028 release window, a timeline Books of Brilliance reports was reaffirmed in his most recent State of the Sanderson update. In short: the movie moving slowly is a deliberate choice, not a sign that his writing desk has stalled.
